About Agnes de Mille

AGNES DE MILLE achieved fame both as a dancer and choreographer.  Among her masterpieces are RODEO, in which she danced, FALL RIVER LEGEND and THREE VIRGINS AND A DEVIL.  Miss de Mille changed the face of the American musical theatre with her choreography for OKLAHOMA!, which enjoyed a hit Broadway revival in 1979, ONE TOUCH OF VENUS, BLOOMER GIRL, CAROUSEL, BRIGADOON, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, PAINT YOU WAGON and other memorable shows.  Miss de Mille directed and choreographed ALLEGRO, THE RAPE OF LUCRETIA, OUT OF THIS WORLD, and COME SUMMER, and she choreographed the film version of OKLAHOMA!.

Her awards include three New York Drama Critic's Circle Awards, two Antoinette Perry (Tony) awards and The Handel Medallion in 1976, the highest award New York City gives.  She had considerable success as a television figure, especially with an Omnibus series on ballet, and was the subject of an Emmy Award winning documentary entitled AGNES THE INDOMITABLE de MILLE produced by Dance in America/PBS.  She has written a number of books including DANCE TO THE PIPER, AND PROMENADE HOME, TO A YOUNG DANCER, LIZZIE BORDEN: DANCE OF DEATH, SPEAK TO ME, DANCE WITH ME and WHERE THE WINGS GROW.  She was a founding member of The American Ballet Theatre and her last ballets, THE INFORMER and THE OTHER were great successes for that company.   She died in October, 1993 at the age of 88 in New York City.

AGNES DE MILLE’S BALLETS are still performed by ballet companies worldwide. Her musical theater work continues to be performed in their original form in full theater productions or by ballet companies as “Suites” or “Dances From…”

AGNES DE MILLE WAS A PROLIFIC WRITER publishing 11 books. She began with autobiographical works, which not only narrate her life story, but simultaneously recount the history of 20th century American dance and theater, in which she played an indelible role. De Mille also published several books on dance history, particularly American dance history. Her last publication, in 1992, was a biography of her close colleague and friend, Martha Graham.

ABOUT THE DE MILLE WORKING GROUP

De Mille Productions was established in 1993 by Jonathan Prude, as heir to Agnes de Mille, to promote the performance and licensing of Agnes de Mille's choreographic works. The ballets are owned by Jonathan Prude and the licensing and stagings are administered and overseen by The De Mille Working Group, under the directorship of Anderson Ferrell. Representation is through The Law Offices of Richard Garmise, PLLC.
